About Metric Kitchen

Metric Kitchen turns US recipes into grams, millilitres and degrees Celsius, so you can cook American recipes with metric scales, jugs and ovens.

How the conversions work

US recipes measure most things by volume: cups, tablespoons and teaspoons. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar take up the same space but weigh very different amounts, so we convert dry and solid ingredients using each ingredient's weight per cup. Our table covers more than 160 ingredients, based on USDA FoodData Central and standard baking ingredient-weight charts.

  • A US cup is 236.6 ml, a tablespoon 14.8 ml and a teaspoon 4.9 ml.
  • Liquids are shown in millilitres, and dry ingredients in grams.
  • Teaspoons and tablespoons stay as spoons, since metric kitchens have 5 ml and 15 ml spoons too. We add grams for things like salt and baking powder.
  • Amounts are rounded the way a cook would round them (453.6 g becomes 450 g), and oven temperatures use the standard values found on metric oven dials.

Weights by volume are always approximate, because they depend on how you fill the cup. If a recipe gives its own gram weights, we use those instead.

Our recipe reader

When a visitor pastes a recipe link, our server fetches that one page and reads the structured recipe data the site publishes for search engines (schema.org). We show only the ingredient list, oven temperatures and pan sizes, converted to metric, with a prominent link back to the original for the method, photos and everything else.

  • It only runs when a person asks for a specific recipe. It does not crawl or index sites.
  • It identifies itself honestly as MetricKitchenBot/1.0 and links to this page.
  • It does not get around paywalls, logins or bot protection, and it skips recipes marked as not free.
  • It keeps the extracted summary for at most one hour to avoid repeat requests, and never stores copies of pages.

If you run a recipe site and would prefer we didn't read your pages, email [email protected] and we'll add your domain to our do-not-fetch list. Visitors will then be asked to copy your ingredient list themselves.
